Today’s Youth, Tomorrow’s Frankenstein Views on School Shootings On a sunny spring day in April 1999, a suburban school named Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado found itself under attack by two of its own students. (http://www.knowgangs.com) In less than fifteen minutes of the first lunch period on that Tuesday, two armed students killed thirteen and wounded twenty-one fellow classmates before they turned the guns on themselves - the most devastating school shooting in U.S. history. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the only school shooting; about thirty-five students die every year from school shootings. This generation comes from violence, hatred, and ignorance- the three principal factors that cause school shootings. In the novel Frankenstein (Mary Shelly), Dr. Victor Frankenstein creates a creature that is horribly, brutally hideous. The creature has a heart of gold and a beautiful soul; it is eager to learn and be part of the society it witnesses. But the creature is rejected, insulted, beaten, and hated by everyone it meets. Soon enough the creature becomes a violent and hateful monster, killing people close to it and destroying its home. The question eventually arises: who is responsible for the damage created by the creature? High school is a place where bullying, teasing, threats, humiliation, sarcasm, physical abuse and social isolation are commonplace. Almost 30% of youth in the United States are estimated to be involved in bullying as either a bully, a target of bullying, or both. (safeyouth.org) The shooters are usually among those who are tormented daily by their peers. Killing, then, is their act of revenge. Although this does not suggest that torment justify murder, it does illustrate that the hostile atmosphere of most high schools is a major root cause of the recent shootings. Try to imagine staring at the clock on a Friday afternoon, feeling the bruises from the three beatings you took already that day and the fifteen you took over the past week, remembering the hundred beatings you'd absorbed that month, knowing that you'll probably have to endure at least one more before you can get the hell out of there and get home. And we wonder why some kids go for a gun. Schools are supposed to be second homes. It goes without saying that students should feel safe, comfortable, and happy at school. They're all there for the same reason. They're all stuck in the same boat of studying for the same diploma exams and going to the same assemblies.

In chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby, a reporter comes to Gatsby’s door to interview him about his personal life. Jay Gatsby’s original name was James Gatz and he was born on a North Dakota farm but went to college in St. Olaf, Minnesota. He dropped out of college and later met the wealthy Dan Cody who hired him as a personal assistant. When Dan Cody died he left Gatsby $25,000, but his mistress prevented Gatsby from claiming it. After that, Gatsby was determined to become rich and successful. Later on, Nick visits Gatsby and is shocked to find Tom Buchanan there, and the next Saturday Tom and Daisy attend one of Gatsby’s parties. After the party Gatsby is worried that Daisy did not enjoy it and Nick tells him to give up on Daisy, however, Gatsby refuses and instead tells Nick about he and Daisy’s past. The quote that best describes Jay Gatsby is, â€Å"He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy† (110). The good qualities of Jay Gatsby are he is a loyal person and he has a good heart. The bad qualities of Gatsby are he is amoral, dishonest, and throws his money away. Fitzgerald developed this character to show how people use their wealth to get love only to discover the love is not real. Additionally, he is developed throughout the novel to be an example of how living extravagantly can be an empty life. A meaningful quote in the chapter is, â€Å"The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself† (98). This quote is meaningful to the story because it reveals the truth of Gatsby changing his identity. Also, it focuses on the fact that Gatsby wasn’t going to let any obstacle stop him from fu... ..., to Nick, â€Å"It was a photograph of the house cracked in the corners and dirty with many hands† (172), and again by Nick, â€Å"On the last night†¦I went over and looked at that huge incoherent failure of a house once more† (179). This symbol is important to the story because it symbolizes the emptiness of Gatsby’s life and shows how his quest for Daisy was a failure. The East and West were mentioned by Nick, â€Å"Even when the East excited me most, even when I was most keenly aware of it superiority to the bored, sprawling, swollen towns beyond the Ohio†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (176). It was mentioned again by Nick soon after, â€Å"After Gatsby’s death the East was haunted for me like that, distorted beyond my eyes’ power of correction† (176). The symbol is important to the story because they represented the different social classes and how they made a barrier between the people from the East and West.

This line sounds stereotypically from a fantasy film, and it would perhaps not fit in to other genres such as comedy or romance. Fantasy films often take us in to a different world and away from the imperfections of our normal life, they are a great contrast to our lives, in fantasy films things are always extremes, either great things are happening, or extremely bad things are occurring; whereas for the everyday person, such things rarely happen and life is just monotonous. To be taken in to a life of someone else’s with unbelievable things happening to them is an excitement and people enjoy being taken from their world and being placed in a dream place, where everything is perfect. Films of the fantasy genre are mainly based on popular myths and legends, characters are things like dragons, wizards, elves, dwarves – all things we have heard stories about. Films stretch these myths and bring them to life; they often bring back elements of our childhood and will therefore entertain us even more. Settings, characters, events, music, endings and dialogue all contribute to us experiencing these things. Also, these certain things in a film will be very typical of the particular genre, some styles of music and characters will only fit in one genre, and some genres will only have certain music and characters. The film Lord of the rings – The fellowship of the ring has many attributes of its fantasy genre, the settings and locations within the film are all similar to that of many of fantasy movies. One of the settings in Lord of the Rings is Lothlorien, it contains many huge elaborate buildings, and beautiful gardens; the weather here is never bad and the atmosphere is always bright and cheerful. This setting will help emphasise what is happening in it, often in a place that is light and peaceful scenes with happy moments will be portrayed here, rather than dark upsetting scenes such as battles. These surroundings help engage the audience as what they’re seeing is incredible and wouldn’t be something they’d see in real life, it will interest them to see something they haven’t seen before. Another location in this film is the mines of Moria, this is the opposite of the previous setting, here it is always dark, gloomy, cold and damp; one again, the surroundings in the film will determine what the audience will be feeling, when they see this setting, they will be anticipating something bad to be happening and this will help to get the audience engaged in the film. In fantasy films, there will always be certain types of characters, a strong and brave person, someone who is wise and clever, one who is weak yet brave and noble, a beautiful woman who is adored by most of the characters. There will often be an evil counterpart for these characters, and the characters within The Lord of the Rings are all what you would expect to see in a fantasy movie. The main character in this film is Frodo, he has little strength and fighting ability but is strong willed and brave. He has the characteristics of the typical fantasy main character, and these characteristics help entertain the audience; they like to see an underdog win. Also they will be a character the audience can usually relate to and are often a more credible person than most others in fantasy films. Frodo has three friends, Meri, Pippin and Sam who are all similar to him these characters add a comedy element to some parts of the film, mostly to relieve the tension when needed. This helps entertain the audience more so. In Lord of the Rings there is a slight exception to the rule of there being one person who is strong, brave and does most of the fighting, as there are four characters like this, Aragorn (Strider), Boromir, Gimli and Legolas. Having four incredible characters intensifies the battles, also all the characters are unrealistic yet this entertains people more as they are seeing something they wouldn’t usually see. Once again fitting in with the stereotypes of the fantasy genre there is a beautiful woman that someone falls in love with, audiences often like romance within a film, especially between two characters they have seen a lot of during the movie and have grown attached to. People like to see other people they like succeed or do well, whether it’s in a fight or in a relationship. This is yet another technique that gets the audience more in to the film. The final character typical of almost every fantasy film is the evil one, in this particular film it is Saruman, he is originally good but is then corrupted and turns evil. With an evil character in a film, it gives the viewer someone to hate and whenever they do anything to the good characters; it angers the audience and lures them deeper and deeper in to the world of the film. Another thing that is very much a characteristic of a fantasy film is the names of the characters, it’s not every day you meet someone called Boromir or Frodo, with these incredible , unusual names it takes the audience even further away from there normal life and more in to the movie. Events in a film are what entertain us the most, they are the factor that determines whether we enjoy a movie or not. Different people like to see different things on screen and films often need to try and interest everyone. Events in a fantasy film can completely change how we feel, they can make us sad, happy, angry, a whole range of different emotions. Fantasy films in particular try and cater for everyone’s tastes; they include intense battle scenes, yet also have the contrast with romantic love scenes. The most typical event in a fantasy film is a battle, or maybe even multiple battles, these engage the viewer and also determine what characters the audience take a liking to. The fights are mostly between the main character and their arch nemesis, the battles are incredible and nothing anyone would see in real life, therefore they entertain the audience. The other event that is almost always in a fantasy film is romantic scene, between the main ‘good’ character, and the beautiful lady. People like to see characters they like, succeed in a relationship, or even a battle for that matter. Also, the love scene acts as good relief from the stresses of the fights and other more aggressive moments in the film. Lord of The Rings once again contains these stereotypes; the battle at weather top between the four hobbits and Aragorn against the ring wraiths, the fight is intense and ends with one of the main characters, Frodo, being stabbed. This makes the audience feel more hatred towards the ring wraiths who are the evil characters, and more sympathetic towards Frodo.

This theme of isolation is now and then explored in the world of fiction and has always been a topic that has been looked upon with interest. Isolation of a person means seclusion or solitude, which is, lack of contact with other people. 1 There are two types of isolation, it being deliberate or unintentional. People may seek physical seclusion to remove distractions and make it easier to concentrate, reflect, or meditate. On the other hand, some people are unaware of the isolation they are in, as in; it is enforced upon them by society. The authors Clarice Lispector and Keri Hulme portray an unusual amount of isolation, both deliberate and unintentional, in the characters of their books The Hour of the Star and The Bone People. In The Bone People, Kerewin chooses to be in isolation while on the other hand, in The Hour of the Star, Macabea plunges into seclusion because of societal constraint. Both the authors use various means to present this issue, such as the use of symbols such as mirrors and imagery of vampires. Mirrors are used as symbols in both books to portray the seclusion of the characters. They are a reflection of one self, and therefore give rise to self-awareness. In The Hour of the Star, Macabea is constantly confronted by society, and her refute to this is a form of isolation in the company of a mirror. When she receives a warning from her boss: the girl [Macabea] went to the lavatory where she could be alone, for she felt quite shaken. she examines herself in the mirror and reflects upon herself so young and yet so tarnished (Lispector, 24). The mirror symbolises how the external world would view her tarnished and insignificant. This perception of the external world translates into reality, and she shuns herself from the outside world. Rodrigo, the creator of Macabea, symbolises the external world, and he imposes this dark and tarnished image of her on her. Another interpretation is that, the mirror, being dark and tarnished, represents society, and thus society is dark and tarnished. The purity within Macabea might not be able to withstand the impurity in the external world, and so she naturally requires to place herself in solitude. Another instance is when she does not turn up for work under the pretext of having a tooth extracted. The next day, when her roommates leave for work she [Macabea] could enjoy at long last the greatest privilege of all: solitude (Lispector, 41). This is the one time in the book when she really expresses herself, as she waltzes around the room with reckless abandon (Lispector, 41). She then resorts to the mirror to confront herself. Normally disgusted by her own image, she feels elation now on confronting herself in front of the mirror, something she has never felt before. To confront herself was a pleasure that she had never before experienced Even looking at herself in the mirror was no longer quite so alarming (Lispector, 41). Thus, it is inferred from this that her happiness or depression in a state of solitude is subjective to the context, as in, the events that precede this state of isolation. It is these events that force her into seclusion in the first place. Similarly, in The Bone People too, the portrayal of solitude is exemplified by the usage of mirrors as symbolic of self-awareness. Kerewin has a strong desire to be isolated, and this is shown through various means. She [Kerewin] opens a bottle of champagne, and sets the mirror by the candle. She can see her face in it, a candlelit ovoid, with gouges for eyes, shadowmouthed (Hulme, 275). It is the perfect setting for discovering oneself, and she seems to love it. She keeps talking to herself reminiscing over past events and actions. At one point, she says, I used to get afraid that Id look up into the mirror and see nothing there (Hulme, 275). This is very similar to Macabea, as in she too feels that she casts no reflection in the mirror, and that her existence has vanished. Kerewin has an akin attitude to life, and indulges in exploring herself to use image and living light as pointers to the self beyond self (Hulme, 275). She cannot do this in the presence of other human life. She resorts to isolation in her reclusive tower to achieve this. Her isolation has probably caused her fears of people taking from her what she does not want to give love, attention, and maybe her time too. Imagery of Vampires is also used in both books to portray isolation. Vampires are mythological or folkloric creatures believed to be the reanimated corpses of human beings who subsist on human or animal blood. They cannot stand daylight and live in isolation in their coffins throughout the day, and only emerge at night to feed on animal or human blood. In The Hour of the Star, Macabea is compared to being a vampire the vampire casts no reflection in the mirror. She [Macabea] reckoned that it might not be such a bad thing being a vampire (Lispector, 25). As previously said, the dark and tarnished mirror scarcely reflected any image (Lispector, 24). This made her consider losing her existence, and therefore being a vampire. The daylight represents society; night time, solitude. Macabea finds it difficult or maybe even impossible to converge with the society, but then she finds personal satisfaction being on her own: alone. Thus, this image of vampirism signifies isolation forced upon Macabea due to external factors. In The Bone People too, there is the repetitive use of vampire imagery. But it different to The Hour of the Star as in, it does not compare the protagonist Kerewin, but Simon and Joe to be vampires. Kerewin says, Sucking me [Kerewin] dry, it feels like. Emotional vampires, slurping all the juice from my home, thats what (Hulme, 278). She relates Joe and Simon to be as such because they were intruding into her ordered privacy. The word emotional vampires is used to convey her powerlessness against them, as they can not only harm her physically, but also emotionally. Harm is interpreted as taking some belonging away from one. In that sense, her personal satisfaction in being isolated from society is being harmed, and her life is becoming meaningless or being sucked dry. She is attacked by vampires, in the sense, that they are sucking her desire for isolation away from her. The two novels are very similar in terms of the portrayal of isolation in the main characters. While deliberate isolation is evident in Kerewins character throughout the story, it is quite the opposite for Macabea. She resorts to solitude because of societal pressures. And this is well portrayed by Lispector and Hulme by the use of the mirror symbol and vampire imagery. The mirror is a reflection of oneself, and self-evaluation takes place when confronted by it, both in The Hour of the Star and The Bone People. It is a means of getting away from the external world and spending time with oneself; rediscovering oneself. The imagery of vampires is also used to great effect. While in The Hour of the Star, it is used in the context of the protagonist considering herself to be a recluse from society, in The Bone People, Kerewin feels attacked by the vampires, Joe and Simon, and they present themselves as an obstacle to her drive to isolation. Therefore, symbolic imagery is used widely to depict isolation as a characteristic of the respective main characters in The Hour of the Star and The Bone People as well as bringing out the characters gradual attainment of awareness with respect to the isolation and ephemeral sense of their individual existences.

Mineral Photography Tips Know your camera.You can take wonderful pictures of mineral specimens using a disposable camera or cell phone; you can take terrible photos using a high-end SLR. If you know what works in terms of distance and lighting for the camera you are using then youll have a much better chance of taking a great shot.Be accurate.If you are taking a photo of a mineral out in the field, then take the picture of the mineral where you found it rather than moving it to a pretty location.Take multiple pictures.If youre in the field, approach your specimen from different angles and take a variety of shots. Do the same back home. Taking ten shots of the exact same angle, background, and lighting is less likely to give you a great photo than taking several different photos.Make the mineral the center of attention.If possible, make it the only object in the photo. The Failure of the De Havilland Comet Aircraft Following World War II and the jet engine technology that emerged largely toward its end, aerospace engineers knew well that the technology had great potential for use in the commercial aviation industry. The Comet was the first aircraft to utilize jet propulsion; however, its designers failed to consider the metallurgy of the aircraft’s materials under flight conditions or the consequences of their atypical window design. The aircraft was designed by Britain’s De Havilland Aircraft Company and entered service in May 1952. After a year of service, however, the design issues mentioned above resulted in the failure of several Comet aircraft. Extensive evaluations revealed that repeated pressurization stress on the aircraft’s main cabin had caused its structure to fail. At the time when Comet development had begun, De Havilland was aware that Boeing and other leading aircraft manufacturers were also considering jet-driven planes. If De Havilland could build the first jetliner, not only the company but Britain itself could be poised to lead the aerospace industry. With 90% of airline passengers everywhere traveling on Boeing aircraft in 1939 according to Pushkar, R.G. (2002), the British government had been anxious for a development such as the Comet and supported the project enthusiastically. Pressure to develop the Comet before other companies could release their own jetliners likely contributed to some testing negligence at De Havilland. The scene is of a rocky path, possibly a hiking trail on the side of a mountain, and a few trees that veil the sky in patches of leaves. Cezanne’s method of painting is rather interesting, in that he paints each stroke like a plate of color, creating an overlapping mosaic. The palette he chose is also remarkable with bright, almost cartoonish shades of pigment that give an underlying sense of realism to the painting. Looking at Cezanne’s work often makes one wonder if impressionism is a study of light being cast on objects or of life being cast out from the object. The overall â€Å"feel† of a painting is often determined by the way each brushstroke is applied to the canvas. Cezanne’s work resembles a mosaic piece, except his blocks of color are intermixed and overlap eachother. Each brushstroke rests on its own plane in the painted space, giving the painting a sense of depth unique to the three-dimensional information of the trees off in the distance and the boulders on the ground. The thick, dark outline of the trees and rocks also add depth to the piece, separating the shaded trail from the bright midday sky. Using a little imagination, one can almost pick off individual leaves from the green and brown patches of paint used to represent them. Cezanne’s choice of color is exceptional in expressing the particular mood in a scene, as shown in this painting. A rich blend of purples, reds, and browns in the rocks and tree trunks nicely compliments the bright blue sky and green foliage. The dull, muted tones of the rocks give weight and gravity to the scene while the light and dark greens seem to dance in the winds of the sky blue background. Lighting and shadows are also well done to add the final touch of depth to the piece.

Therefore, if there was anything that Maya did which could possibly be interpreted that she was not interested in him, then Miles would take that small action and use it to confirm his schema. The opposite would be true for any actions that showed that she was interested in him. When Maya did finally dump him, because he did not tell her about Jack’s engagement, this was confirmation that his original schema was correct, as this assimilated into his world view. However, by the end of the film, there was evidence that Miles have finally rejected his schema, as she called h im and he immediately drove up to go to her house. Native Americans (Subordinate Group) Essay One often wonders where the Native North Americans originated from. Some theories have been discussed about the peopling of the Americas. Early theories involving lost tribes and continents were based purely on speculation instead of actual scientific facts. Discoveries made during many archeological expeditions have helped shape the always changing interpretations by adding more questions and more theories. There have been genetic and linguistic studies which raised more understanding and brought new questions. It is theorized that during the latter part of the Cenozoic era, also known as the age of mammals that the Wisconsin glaciation caused enough of the planet’s water supply to turn into ice. This lowered the oceans and exposed now submerged land. This event created a stretch of land that the large mammals of the Ice Age era, along with the natives of that era, could very well have migrated across the newly formed land bridge, which now connected two continents. This land bridge is known as the Bering Strait, or Beringia. During the time that Beringia existed, the Wisconsin glaciers most likely prohibited migration to any southern or eastern regions. Another theory suggests that the early natives may have inhabited the now Alaskan region because it was ice-free due to low precipitation. Several melts over a period of time created passageways, and evidence from archeological site implies that there was an ice-free corridor for thousands of years. It was during another melt approximately ten thousand years ago, that a second corridor was most likely formed farther east along the borders of Saskatchewan and Canada plains. This points to the possibility that the ancient people could have traveled eastward along the rivers in the Great Plains, and down further south. The Indians known to history as the Sioux are also known as Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota, meaning allies. This is my heritage. I am a member of the largest division of Siouan family, otherwise known as Sioux. The name is from a term given to the largest and well- known of the tribal groups. At one time, my people stretched from the west banks of the Mississippi northward from Arkansas and the Rocky Mountains. The Dakotas also inhabited territory east of the river up to Wisconsin and Missouri. They were here to encounter DeSoto on his journey in 1541, when he reached the Indian villages in what is now eastern Arkansas. Another hundred years passed before any mention of Sioux existing, when in 1658 some Jesuit missionaries heard of the existence of about thirty Dakota villages just north of a Potawatomi mission. This was located at about the head of Green Bay, Wisconsin, in St. Michael. It was during the middle 1600’s when the Sioux, along with the Arapaho and Cheyenne had to migrate further westward towards the Great Plains to what is known as North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota. This migration was mainly due to the O jibwa and Chippewa tribes pushing them out of the Great Lakes region. The Ojibwa and Chippewa had been pushed out of their own land that had been further east, by the European settlers of that time. In 1805 Lewis and Clark passed through the center of this region and made contact with the Sioux tribes. After this took place, several more expeditions brought traders that settled among the tribes, and in the course of some time, permanent settlers arrived. This made the area so small that eventually the people of my tribe were forced to live in Indian Territories or confined to Nebraska, the Dakotas, or Montana. This brought on a series of raids and counter raids that lasted from roughly 1850 through 1890 and were known as the Sioux Wars. In the first years of the twentieth century, the Dakotas also known as Tetons began the process of adapting to their new way of life. They still had strong faith in their own traditions, but realized that the old way was gone forever. Numerous changes with the economy and politics were forced on my people by the government. The people strived to establish a life for themselves that used both new changes, but still remained true to their values and beliefs. During the rest of the twentieth century, all of the reservations for the Dakotas, Lakotas, and Tetons lost more land due to ownership passes and inheritances. Division between rural dwellers and people who live in town have grown bigger. Rural residents tend to retain their use of native language, and be involved in cultural events, when townspeople adapt other aspects of the American culture. Most of the Sioux nation and other groups of American Indians live in South Dakota, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and North Dakota at present time on privatized land created by the government many years ago.
